Devils goalie Cory Schneider puts N.J. home on market for $2.9M

New Jersey Devils  goaltender Cory Schneider, who  inked a seven-year, $42 million contract in 2014 to stay with the team, put his 6,900-square-foot Short Hills home on the market Wednesday for just under $2.9 million, according to its Trulia listing.

How legal sports bets will be placed: States that legalize gambling will authorize sportsbooks to operate at racetracks, casinos and other locations, including stadiums (depending on the league and state). Sportsbooks look like sports bars, but with teller windows along the walls instead of fake Irish Pub knickknacks. But most casual wagers will use smartphone apps like the ones both Las Vegas and international betting agencies have operated for years. Placing a bet will be like setting a fantasy lineup or purchasing a last-second anniversary gift. And don’t worry about the security and confidentiality of these semi-murky financial transactions: The pornography industry blazed those trails decades ago.

It goes without saying that you shouldn’t blow Junior’s college savings on a three-team parlay.

Owens told 105.3 The Fan that he thinks players like wide receiver Dez Bryant have become scapegoats for the team’s offensive performance, when it’s really Garrett’s fault that the Cowboys have “pretty much been at a standstill” during his tenure.

When you really look at it, it doesn’t make sense for Jason Garrett to continue to have his job, Owens said on The Fan. “(The Cowboys are) not really expanding or not really progressing with the organization, even as a team, under his coaching tenure there.”

Owens, who was voted into the Hall of Fame earlier this year, spent three seasons in Dallas over the course of his 15-year career. He overlapped with Garrett when the latter was the Cowboys’ offensive coordinator in 2007 and 2008.cowboys_071

Chargers tight end Hunter Henry expected to miss season with torn ACL

Chargers tight end Hunter Henry is expected to miss the 2018 season with a torn ACL, the team announced Tuesday.

The 23-year-old has been a dangerous red-zone target for the Charges throughout his two-year career. He hauled in eight touchdown passes and registered 478 receiving yards as a rookie in 2016. Henry was originally selected by the Chargers in the second round of the draft that season.

The NHL’s statement noted that the ruling “does not directly impact the League or any of our Clubs in the short term.”

In a statement, the NCAA said it is still reviewing the decision “to understand the overall implications to college sports (and) we will adjust sports wagering and championship policies to align with the direction from the court.”

The NFL still has to walk the tightrope of protecting all those interests, navigating differing state decisions about sports betting, and its principles (“long-standing and unwavering commitment to protecting the integrity of our game”) re-stated in its response to the Supreme Court ruling.

The idea that they will, in their words, “call on Congress again, this time to enact a core regulatory framework” for sports betting builds intrigue for yet another league appearanceby commissioner Roger Goodell or another high-ranking officialbefore lawmakers who know how often the NFL has been exposed in similar situations previously. Everything the league has said to Congress about concussions, for example.

So, expecting Congress to take the NFL’s side on reinforcing their contradictory views on betting, in the face of a Supreme Court ruling, might not yield much. It will only lengthen the league’s journey to accepting and capitalizing on America’s love of its sport and of betting. It was already part of the way there, but the entire trip will take a while.

Cowboys willing, excited to go young at quarterback

Some teams will talk about going young at a certain positions, but the Cowboys have taken it to the extreme.

During an interview on SiriusXM NFL Radio, Cowboys executive Stephen Jones said he’s comfortable with the young group he has, which is coached by another youngster.

With former quarterback Kellen Moore (29) taking over as quarterbacks coach, he’ll oversee a group that includes Dak Prescott (24), Cooper Rush (24), and fifth-round draft pick Mike White (23).

Which establishes the standard now for other top quarterbacks. He also did it with a year left on his deal, which you can look at as the tradeoff for having non-guaranteed years on the back end. Either way, if you’re Rodgers or Tom Brady now, it feels like three fully guaranteed years would be a baseline ask in negotiations. Second, Ryan had guarantees that, as a practical matter, are full going into a fourth year, which is pretty much unprecedented for a veteran deal. He’s due $23 million in 2021, and $5. 5 million of that becomes fully guaranteed next March (bringing the total guarantee to $100 million). Why is that important?

The Anderson-McCaffrey combination provides intrigue, but also working in the Panthers ‘ favor is Turner’s track record with running backs.

The longtime NFL coach has worked with numerous 1,000-yard rushers, including Pro Football Hall of Famers Emmitt Smith and LaDainian Tomlinson, Adrian Peterson and Stephen Davis. Additionally, Turner has worked with the versatile Darren Sproles, whose skill set is comparable to McCaffrey.

Given Turner’s ability to get the most out of a backfield, Anderson looks forward to sharing the workload with McCaffrey.

One thing that’s going to be true is we’re both going to play, Anderson said. “Who knows from there? He has a special skill set that I’m pretty sure Norv is going to use to the full capability maximum.

And same with me. I got a skill set that he’s going to use for me very well. So, I was really high up there on explosive runs of 20 yards or more, that’s something I can build off of and I’m excited about.

Terrence Brooks did not overachieve—or even justachieve.broncos_008_383aa0a92acdcb3d-180x180

Terence Newman says this will be his final season

Terence Newman is no Tom Brady.

One season in his 40s is enough for him.

Newman joined the Vikings in 2015, and has also played with the Cowboys and Bengals, working with coach Mike Zimmer at both stops along the way.

When you have a quarterback that’s won as much as Eli, that played through a year like last year, the way to get him back to where he needs to be, we need to block them better, and then the best friend for the quarterback is the running back, where you turn around, hand the ball off and gain yards, Shurmur said.

It all goes hand in hand. Play action’s way more believable. You can actually run a bootleg naked with a guy like Eli.

And then when you choose to drop back and throw, everything’s not always on his plate. So it all goes hand in hand. But first, Shurmur had to believe in Manning. During our talk, he detailed a few reasons why he does…The passion for the game has gone nowhere. NFL players nearing retirement usually don’t call it quits because they’re sick of Sunday. They get tired of Monday to Saturday. And so what Shurmur noticed when he first took the job in January really resonated, because Manning looked like he was as far away from that as a guy his age could be.

The foundation’s op-ed was published Monday. The Jim Jefferies Show aired Tuesday. And now here we are on Wednesday, five years after NEVER.

Wood is the traditional gift for a fifth anniversary. Jefferies took Washington to the woodshed — and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation told the team when it’ll be eligible for its sports award again.

Not never, but not until the team stops harming the health of Native American children.

In college, we weren’t really under center like that in a certain situation, Jackson said, via the Baltimore Sun.

But now, I’m under it constantly. I’ve got to work on that a lot more. To that end, Jackson did spend as much time as possible talking to Mornhinweg, Harbaugh or Urban when the team was on the field.broncos_090_d07000fd8593aad3-180x180

Jarius Wright: I could teach Norv Turner’s offense to a baby

The Panthers drafted wide receiver D.J. Moore in the first round of the draft and they’ll soon get to work teaching him the offensive system put in place by offensive coordinator Norv Turner.

One of the people helping to impart that knowledge to the rookie is a player he could find himself competing against for playing time. The Panthers signed Jarius Wright to a three-year deal this offseason and Wright comes to Carolina with more than two years of time in Turner’s system under his belt.

I think that not having to address that mentally and physically, not having to think about not only the interruption of the potential suspension and the suspension but just the physical interruption, the physical aspect of that, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said at the team’s sponsorship golf tournament, via ESPN.

Browns History: Langhorne was amazed just to make an NFL team More Browns History: Langhorne was amazed just to make an NFL team Former Browns wide receiver Reggie Langhorne reflects on the differences between his rookie and second seasons as a professional football player.

Perriman has missed 21 of a possible 48 games because of injuries, and even when he’s well he hasn’t done much. He caught 10 passes last year in 11 games, after 33 in 16 games in 2016.

The Ravens appear to have planned around him, acquiring Michael Crabtree, John Brown, and Willie Snead in free agency and drafting two more wideouts last weekend.

I am very comfortable with the process of interviewing and employing Matt, Wood told Snell. “I will tell you with 1,000-percent certainty that everything I’ve learned confirmed what I already knew about the man and would have no way changed our decision to make him our head coach.”

Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press provided an official statement from Wood, owner Martha Ford and general manager Bob Quinn:

The NFL has penalized players under its personal conduct policy even without a court conviction, so the league will have to decide what action, if any, to take on Patricia.broncos_009_031c018ca465cfe5-180x180

Michael Griffin to sign one-day contract, retire as Titan

I think he has exceptional arm talent, McCarthy said. What we’re asking him to do is, particularly the footwork and just how he fits the scheme, and how he operates is brand new to him. That always excites me, because when you see that guy has no experience or background but has the ability, to me that’s an opportunity for a lot of growth. So I think he has a bright future.

He’s hitting .327 with two homers and a .357 on-base percentage in 15 games and 52 at-bats mostly from the No. 9 spot in the lineup.

Everybody knows the talent Gleyber has, catcher Gary Sanchez said. That’s not a secret. The first time I played with him was back in 2017 spring training and he showed what kind of player he is. To me, he’s just doing what he knows to do.

Said Boone, He’s been special. Obviously, the home run (Sunday), but again, a couple more special defensive plays, which is now on a nightly basis. He’s a difference-maker on defense. To be giving us the kind of at-bats he’s given us down in the order and then right here … that’s showing you the other-way power it’s a special at-bat and he’s been an impact player for us. What more can you say?

More importantly, Jackson landed with the perfect assistant coach in Greg Roman.

You know, Jim Harbaugh’s former right-hand man at Stanford and with the 49ers, the guy vital in the unleashing of Colin Kaepernick on the NFL in 2012.

If there’s anyone coaching at the professional ranks today who knows how to slowly infuse a ridiculously athletic, somewhat raw signal-caller into an NFL offense, it’s Roman, the Ravens’ current assistant head coach.

Before Kaepernick took over the 49ers starting job in 2012 after Alex Smith was injured against the Rams a gig the former Nevada star wouldn’t give back to Smith in San Francisco Kaepernick was used as a gadget player in Roman’s attack.tigers_010-115x115

Hue Jackson is determined to keep Baker Mayfield Mania reined in.

After the No. 1 pick’s first rookie minicamp practice on Friday one in which he showed off his accuracy and nimble feet Jackson tried to temper the enthusiasm for his prized rookie.

He has a lot of characteristics that we love. That’s why he’s here. (But) let’s make sure we pump our brakes a little bit, because he’s got a ways to go and a lot to learn, Jackson said. I’m very excited about him. It was a good first day, but he’s got a ways to go. The guy you’re comparing him to (Tyrod Taylor) has played a lot of games, and won games in the National Football League.

Jackson re-iterated what he’s been saying: Taylor is the starter and there’s not an open competition in camp.

I’m not going to back off of this, he said. We can keep writing this narrative, Tyrod Taylor’s the starting quarterback of this football team, and that won’t change.

Darius Leonard, LB, South Carolina State: A highly athletic linebacker is exactly what a deficient Indianapolis defense needed as it transitions back to the 4-3, cover-2 scheme it relied on in Peyton Manning’s heyday.

It creates a lot of competition, and that competition is helping everyone’s game to level up, Morris said. By doing so, that’s going to help us in the coming seasons. Recruits can see that, and know they’re going into a room where there’s a lot of competition. Big things are going to come out of that.

Morris spoke with NJ Advance Media after Rutgers completed its team clean-up in downtown New Brunswick on Saturday morning. Players walked up and down Easton Avenue and side streets in the neighborhood picking up trash.

It felt good to get up early and do something good, give back to the community, Morris said. These are the people that are coming to the games and supporting us. I think it was a good experience for us.tigers_056-115x115

Darren Sproles’ new deal includes $1M in guarantees

After the Philadelphia Eagles eschewed running backs in the NFL draft, then re-signed Darren Sproles to a new deal, the assumption was the 34-year-old would have a notable role in the offense.

Sproles’ new contract reflects that expectation.

NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported the Eagles gave Sproles a $400,000 signing bonus on his $1.415 million contract, with $1 million in total guarantees. The deal is worth a max of $1.433 million with reachable incentives.

Returning for his 14th NFL season, Sproles should share the pass-catching role along with Corey Clement behind starter Jay Ajayi. Clement showed he can become a special receiving threat out of the backfield. Yet few backs strike fear into defenses like Sproles catching the ball on third down with open grass ahead. Philly will use that threat to its advantage in 2018.

The GM said likewise last month, noting that he did not expect Thomas to hold out this season.

After the draft trade dalliance, Schneider was forced to reiterate his belief that Thomas will remain part of a restructured Seattle squad. To achieve that goal Schneider might need to show Thomas the money. The veteran is set to enter the final year of his contract, earning $8.5 million, and wants a long-term deal. Only after a new contract is signed will the trade talks totally die, and Schneider can stop answering the same rounds of questions.

President Trump on Friday undermined the debut of one of his new lawyers, Rudolph W. Giuliani, telling reporters that the former New York mayor, who conducted a media blitz on Trump’s behalf this week, is still learning the subject matter.

Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump did not specify his concerns, but his comments come in the wake of Giuliani’s revelation that Trump reimbursed a $130,000 payment that his longtime lawyer Michael Cohen made to porn star Stormy Daniels to maintain her silence a month before the 2016 election.canucks_009

Seattle Seahawks part ways with pass rusher Cliff Avril

After joining Pete Carroll’s squad for the most successful five-year run in franchise history, defensive end Cliff Avril ‘s Seattle career is over.

One of the easily overlooked ingredients to Seattle’s celebrated Legion of Boom defense, Avril joined fellow defensive end Michael Bennett in signing bargain free-agent contracts at the advent of the team’s NFC West hegemony in 2013. Within a calendar year, the two veterans were Super Bowl champions.

After entering the league with Detroit’s record-setting 0-16 outfit in 2008, Avril was thrilled to spend the prime years of his career with a perennial contender and a class organization.

Everybody wants to be in Seattle. Nobody wants to leave Seattle, Avril raved in 2015. Everybody wants to be there because we have something good going.

Avril will finish his Seahawks career with 41 sacks in 64 games, including the postseason. He’ll be fondly remembered in the Emerald City not just as a disruptive defense force, but also as a humanitarian who pledged to build a new house in Haiti for each sack he amassed in a career-best 2016 season.

The free-agent additions of Michael Crabtree, John Brown and Willie Snead factored in, along with the team’s research on positional production.

First-round tight ends historically have done much better than first-round wideouts, a much more volatile position in the draft, DeCosta explained.

Oklahoma tackle Orlando Brown saw his stock drop precipitously after a nightmare performance at the NFL Scouting Combine. What DeCosta saw, however, was a shutdown tackle on game tape. When the Ravens scouted him during the season, they thought he was first-round caliber. They expect him to compete immediately for the starting right-tackle job.

Yet, I still empathize with current team presidents and GMs as they watch talented players come off the board prior to their selections. Then I feel their excitement and trepidation when they make those selections.giants_155

Raiders Cancel Visit With LB Brian Cushing Due To Pending Deal With Derrick Johnson

Adam Schefter is now reporting that the Raiders have canceled their visit with free agent LB Brian Cushing now that they’re expected to sign Derrick Johnson to a contract.

Rising stars: Look for Louis Riddick, a rocket ship in Bristol, to get more air time. Ditto for McShay, Kiper’s longtime draft foil.

The draft is an emotional time for execs, because as players are being selected by other teams, there is a mix of shock, mild surprise, dismay, compliments or disdain based on reactions to certain selections. I remember a few drafts when it seemed our draft room was bugged, because in several rounds, players we were targeting were picked within a spot or two of our selection.

For all the excitement on draft day, there also is a lot of tedium, including the pre-draft process. In the later rounds, things can get boring, especially during a round in which a team has no picks. Long days in meetings prior to the draft are followed by long days during the draft. Several meals are eaten in the draft room. Draft analysts take over the TVs at an excessive rate.

The 2018 NFL Draft order is set. At this point, only trades will affect where and when teams will pick through all seven rounds.

This year, 32 compensatory draft picks were awarded to 15 teams for a total of 256 selections in the 2018 NFL Draft. Under the rules for compensatory draft selections, a team losing more or better compensatory free agents than it acquires in the previous year is eligible to receive compensatory draft picks.

Did you know? The NFL has confirmed running back Saquon Barkley of Penn State and quarterbacks Sam Darnold of USC and Josh Allen of Wyoming will attend the draft. … If five quarterbacks are taken in Round 1, it will mark the third time that has happened since the beginning of the so-called “common draft” in 1967. The 1983 version holds the record with six QB’s taken in Round 1, including Pro Football Hall of Famers John Elway, Dan Marino and Jim Kelly.nike_jets_1629
