Why the NFL plans to suspend Jameis Winston for 3 games

The Uber driver retained attorney John Clune, who represented the woman who claimed Winston sexually assaulted her while he was a student-athlete at Florida State University.

However, the NFL concluded that Darby was not in the car for the entire ride:

What happens now? Winston and the NFLPA will surely appeal the suspension to the NFL once it becomes official. Roger Goodell will have the choice of either hearing the appeal himself or passing it off to an arbitrator. If this discipline is upheld, Winston could either choose to serve the suspension or pursue a different outcome by filing a lawsuit against the NFL.

Tom Murphy (R), 4 percent, Colorado Rockies vs. Miami Marlins (LHP Wei-Yin Chen): The underperforming Rockies offense took advantage of some lesser Mets starters, and now they get the chance to continue the momentum against a suspect Marlins staff. Murphy has been sharing the at-bats against a lefty with Chris Iannetta. Using either is fine Iannetta played versus a lefty on Thursday, so it’s probably Murphy’s turn on Friday.

Justin Bour (L), 41 percent, Miami Marlins at Colorado Rockies (RHP Jon Gray): Bour has been a frequent visitor to this space, so we’ll try to keep his mentions to the most apropos scenarios. Having the chance to unleash his power in Coors is such an occasion, despite facing Gray. To that end, after handling his home starts well the past couple of seasons, Gray checks in with a 6.45 ERA and 1.59 WHIP at home.

As former Cardinals coach Bruce Arians has pointed out, however, that approach has its limits.

Weighted on-base average (wOBA) is the primary statistic used in the calculation. Ratings range from 1 to 10, with 10 representing the best possible matchup, statistically speaking, and 1 representing the worst. For example, a 10 is a must-start rating, while a 1 should be avoided (if possible); a 1-2 is poor, 3-4 is fair, 5-6 is average, 7-8 is very good and 9-10 is excellent.

If/when the suspension comes to pass and Winston is unable to win an appeal (or chooses not to appeal) reducing the suspension to one or zero games, the Buccaneers will be without their quarterback when the defending Super Bowl champions come to town.

According to a report Winston is prepared for the NFL to levy a suspension of some kind and the thought from the Winston camp is that would be a maximum of three games… I’ve been told that would seem to be the maximum number of games that the suspension could be. It’s also likely that it’s less than that and it’s one game.

Boone isn’t ruling that out.

I feel like there’s a chance he’s playing games in the Seattle series, but Clint, I think, even in that scenario for the short term will be a part of that, the manager said.

Frazier returned with a.375 average in eight at-bats with the Yankees in two previous short stints and a.312 average with seven homers in 38 Triple-A games.

The best guess is that Torreyes spends 10 days in Triple-A and then replaces Frazier. By rule that is the quickest the Yankees can bring Torreyes back without another player going on the DL.

Barkley understands my pain. He is mature beyond his years already a father but he is as active on social media as you would expect from any 21-year-old.

Barkley has 198,000 followers on Twitter and 821,000 on an Instagram page he tries to keep family friendly. Dozens undoubtedly soon will sound off and blame him for a lost fantasy football matchup or a newly legalized wager.

I think you should be active because you want to interact with the positive stuff, with the fans, Barkley said. You play this sport because you love it and you are passionate and a competitor, but it reminds you that you can have an impact on people’s lives.

Most star athletes claim they do not read social media. Not this one.

That’s a lie, Barkley said. Unless you are like Odell (Beckham) and have a hundred thousand million followers. Then you probably don’t see it. But Twitter, especially verified people, I see it.

Every NFL Team’s Biggest Mistake of the Past Decade

Head to Google and you’ll find approximately 43 million pages of cliches about everybody making mistakes, including a hit from Hannah Montana. And while it’s true that nobody is perfect, there’s little room for error in the NFL.

That’s why shelf lives are so short in this league, whether we’re talking about players, coaches or general managers. You’re practically spinning a wheel in the NFL draft, free agency is a game for suckers that nevertheless can’t be ignored and every trade has a winner and a loser.

On Wednesday, he picked up the contract options for guard T.J. McConnell and forward Richaun Holmes.

Lopetegui, who was hired as the new Real Madrid head coach Tuesday on a three-year contract, was sacked by RSFF president Luis Rubiales Wednesday. Rubiales was supposed to be at the FIFA Congress to vote on the 2026 bid, but flew out to Spain’s training base at Krasnodar to fire his manager.

We have been forced to dispense with the national coach. We wish him the greatest of luck, said Rubiales.

Hackenberg passed through waivers and is now a free agent. And as such, he can visit any team he wants… or, more accurately, any team that wants him.

The Jets, of course, drafted Hackenberg in Round 2 in 2016. He wasn’t good enough to get a single regular season snap for them. And so they essentially cut him after they drafted Sam Darnold third overall this spring. Then Hackenberg couldn’t even last one month in Oakland.

The Patriots’ future Hall of Fame quarterback, Tom Brady, is getting up there in years. He turns 41 in August, though he remains elite.

That take doesn’t really go along with the numbers–or eye test.

Machado looks slower and rigid at shortstop, and nothing like the dominant defender he has been at third base since arriving to the majors in 2012. According to Baseball Reference, Machado has actually cost the Orioles 11 runs at shortstop on defense this year. From 2012-2017, he saved 81 runs at third base.

Rams waive Larry Rose, Chucky Williams

The Rams waived running back Larry Rose and defensive back Chucky Williams on Monday, via the NFL’s transactions wire.

Los Angeles claimed Rose off waivers from Tennessee on May 15. The New Mexico State product signed with the Titans as an undrafted free agent and participated in their rookie minicamp.

While serving his Deflategate suspension at the start of the 2016 season, Brady snuck in some family time and finally took his wife of nine years on a dream honeymoon.

I just said, ‘You know what, I’m going to use this as an opportunity,’ Brady said. I had the month of September off for the first time in 21 years, and I’m going to take advantage of this.

The first thing I did, my wife and I and our kids, we flew out to see my parents. My mom was just starting treatment for cancer, and I said, ‘We’re going golfing and we’re going to Pebble Beach.’ We never went on a honeymoon, my wife and I, so we said, ‘Look we’re going to go to Italy in September.’ So I said, ‘Man, that was the best month off I think I’ve ever had.’

Taylor never saw himself as a bridge to Mayfield, and he still doesn’t. But the Heisman Trophy winner will become the starter at some point not far into the future. Teams don’t spend No. 1 overall picks on a player to sit him on the bench long term.

For now, though, the Browns are Taylor’s team.

I feel that [it’s my team], Taylor said. I never doubted that. It takes time to learn guys on both sides of the ball. It takes time to learn the building, but as far as me commanding and taking control of the huddle, taking control of groups when we’re working out and speaking up when stuff needs to be said, I definitely feel comfortable in doing that. I think guys respect that.

Just because, he’s, like, changing the game, Luke, a 15-year-old in an orange Tebow T-shirt, said. It’s something different.

If Tebow has an opinion as to why so much attention still follows him, he doesn’t want to share it.

I don’t know. What do you think? he asked. I’m thankful that people wanna come out and watch.

NBA legend Julius Erving to place first sports bet at Borgata in Atlantic City

NBA and Sixers legend Julius Dr. J Erving will place the first sports wager at the Borgata casino in Atlantic City on Thursday morning as legal sports betting launches in New Jersey.

When the neighbor asked what Winslow was doing there, he said he was looking for his big red dog Clifford. A spokesperson for Winslow later said he was just being sarcastic.

Winslow left, but was later picked up by officers and spent several hours in jail before being released on $50,000 bond.

Blevins did confirm none of the alleged victims were from the mobile home park.

Maybe this sounds like the town you grew up in. And, indeed, it’s just like that, only here, the neighborhood busybody might gossip about the argument Drew Brees and Clay Matthews had about who’s paying for the new fence at the property line.

The occasional squabble aside, NFL Town is a nice place to live. Realtors use words like leafy, idyllic and tony to describe it. Best of all, everyone gets along. This community is inclusive… with one notable exception: On the outskirts of town, beyond the railroad tracks, there exists a hyper-exclusive members-only establishment known as The Superstar Club.

In short, The Superstar Club is a gathering place for the hamlet’s elite. Locals on the wrong side of the velvet rope grumble that the club is a source of dark energy, a cultural eyesore, a shadowy Illuminati-like lair where aristocrats consolidate power to control NFL Town and its population. Members counter that it’s simply a fun place to hang out, talk about life and have a drink. You get the feeling the truth lies in the space between. There’s a bad M. Night Shyamalan movie in here somewhere.

Eric Ebron: Frank Reich and I click

Tight end Eric Ebron hasn’t caught any passes from Andrew Luck since signing with the Colts because Luck hasn’t been throwing any, so he’s tried to forge a bond with the quarterback in other ways.

As we do not want to detract from this great honor being enjoyed by the seven other members of the Class of 2018 [Bobby Beathard, Robert Brazile, Brian Dawkins, Jerry Kramer, Ray Lewis, Randy Moss and Brian Urlacher], their family, friends, and fans; the Pro Football Hall of Fame will have no further comment on the decision made by Terrell Owens, the Hall of Fame’s statement said.

Wentz is still recovering from season-ending knee surgery after he suffered that torn ACL in a game against the Rams in Los Angeles in December. Typically, that is an injury that requires 9-12 months of recovery time, though Wentz is confident that he’s on track to return for the Eagles’ Week 1 match-up with the Atlanta Falcons on Sept. 6.

If that’s the case, then Wentz will have taken less than nine months to recover.

Eagles’ Doug Pederson ‘was looking forward’ to Donald Trump, White House visit

Now, recent reports have indicated Wentz should be back for Week 1, which is a sentiment the star quarterback has expressed repeatedly in interviews. At least, his desire to return in time for the team’s season-opener.

It’s always about improving, so those are tough situations. It’s not about just working with somebody that you’re just going to scrimmage for three days and it’s kind of there’s no rules behind it. I think it’s very specific with what you’re trying to accomplish, so you want to make sure that you’re working with guys that you trust in those situations, people that have the same idea what those practices are going to be about. Everything’s highly competitive, but you’re really trying to get good evaluations of your players through those types of situations.

The Eagles released a statement Monday night that made no mention of the canceled visit

Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie grabbed headlines in April when he reportedly told other owners behind closed doors that Trump was leading one disastrous presidency.

Trump has often used the controversy stirred by protests during the national anthem inspired by Colin Kaepernick for political gains. In a deposition earlier this year, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones reportedly said Trump told him it’s a very winning, strong issue for meand that it lifts me.

Actually the little piece I’m wearing is pretty light, so I don’t actually feel it, Collins said. At the same time, it’s going to mess up my swag, so I’ve got to look good, you know?

Collins’ response drew a laugh and the suggestion that he could use it as an extra weapon in tackling. Of course, he already has averaged 87 tackles per season with eight career interceptions over a three-year career.

I don’t need a weapon, he said. I’ve got my shoulders for that.

Smith-Pelly scored his second goal in as many games on Monday, and his tally proved to be the game-winning goal in the Capitals’ 6-2 win over the Vegas Golden Knights in Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. The victory gave the Capitals a 3-1 series lead and put them within one win of their first Stanley Cup.

The winger, who played in 71 games over two seasons with the Devils before they bought him out of the final year of his contract in June of 2017, now has six goals in 23 postseason games, including two in the Final. He scored just seven goals in 75 regular-season games with the Caps in 2017-18.

When Smith-Pelly joined the Devils in a trade from the Montreal Canadiens in February of 2016, he went on to score eight goals in 18 games with the Devils to end the season. That run gave the Devils hope they found a part of their future, but Smith-Pelly finished with four goals and five assists in 53 games in 2016-17, where he said he played injured for a good portion of the season.

That led to a one-year contract with the Capitals following the Devils’ buyout, and Smith-Pelly, making the league minimum, got another opportunity with his fourth NHL team in seven seasons after the Anaheim Ducks drafted him 42nd overall in the 2010 NHL Draft.

Jaguars continue renovations, officially change stadium name

eagles_125The Jacksonville Jaguars continue to look for ways to reinvent themselves and rejuvenate their fan base.

On Tuesday, it was revealed the stadium formerly known as Everbank Field has officially received a new name. The Jaguars home games will now be played at TIAA Bank Field. The announcement was made via Twitter from the TIAA Bank Field account:

The Jaguars announced a $63 million renovation plan in 2013 to upgrade what was then Everbank Stadium, so the name change is another box checked off the list.

The renovations started with the additions of swimming pools and cabanas. In 2015, the Jaguars became the first team in the NFL to offer their own video game, which was called Duval Dash.

It was at this point that a certain ESPN.com writer and Brannock fan heard about the promotion, got in touch with Smorol, and urged him to do a one-game makeover. It wasn’t a slam-dunk decision for Smorol specialty jerseys cost about $60 a pop, and caps are another $15 each. Add it all up for the entire team and the bill comes to about $2,650, which isn’t chump change for a minor league team. (The jerseys are typically auctioned off, but the proceeds go to charity, not to the team.) Before Smorol could make that investment, he had to be sure that the promotion would be worth it.

He’s putting good swings on the ball, Anthony Rizzo said. He comes to the ballpark like a professional every day. When you see him get results like that, it’s fun.

And it’s fun for Maddon and the Cubs when they get a total team effort in a victory. From little known reliever Randy Rosario (0.71 ERA) keeping the Cubs in the game to 37-year-old Zobrist providing a spark off the bench, the Cubs proved once again that their talent runs deep.

Meanwhile, after Hader was beaten by Heyward and Milwaukee suffered its eighth loss in nine games against the Cubs, the Brewers must be wondering what else can go wrong.

The teams have played playoff atmosphere baseball in the early portion of the season, with the Cubs coming out on top over and over again, this time led by the unlikeliest of offensive heroes.

Monday night game, division teams, it’s a lot of fun, Heyward said. It’s electric. These teams play baseball the right way.

It feels good, Rizzo added. It’s fun playing here. The fans are into it. They’re engaged. These are tough games. Which way is the ball going to fall? This year, fortunately, they’ve fallen our way.Breaking down new-look Seahawks: Russell Wilson needs Penny to shine right away

Will Julio Jones show up for mandatory minicamp?

eagles_126When the Falcons convene on Tuesday for a mandatory minicamp, the biggest question continues to be whether receiver Julio Jones will be there.

Jones skipped all Organized Team Activities, reportedly because he’s not happy with his contract. And while he has denied it during an impromptu discussion with TMZ, the prevailing view continues to be that he’s sending the team a message about dissatisfaction with his compensation package, which averages $14.25 million and pays $10.5 million this year.

Manziel has acknowledged the steep learning curve but told reporters before his first preseason game that he has a pretty good grasp on almost everything that we’re doing. He said he has played Jones’ run-and-shoot scheme a million times on EA Sports’ NCAA Football, and Jones said his approach in many ways mirrors the three- and four-receiver sets Manziel utilized at Texas A&M.

Of course, the charitable arm of the team and the football side dip out of separate pots, but Spielman knows he’s about to have to write some big checks, and soon.

It’s a good problem to have, but we have a very high-priced roster right now,” Spielman said. And eventually some of those guys are going to get aged out, just like we had some of our other Pro Bowlers, . . . and you have to replace them.”

They already have six players with cap numbers over $10 million a year, and two more topping $8 million. That’s going to cause them to adjust elsewhere on the roster.

The hardest thing right now is the economic structure on our team where we have all these high-priced guys now because they all deserve to get paid the way they’ve been playing,” Spielman said. But economically, we’re not going to go out there, you can’t play fantasy football and have $3 (million), $4 (million) or $5 million backup guys. Those are going to be the young guys that we’ve drafted or we’ve developed.”

Browns’ Damarious Randall: NBA Finals jersey promise ‘obviously’ a joke

eagles_127Browns safety Damarious Randall underestimated two things: the power of social media and passion of Cleveland fans.

Randall, who came to the Browns in a March trade from Green Bay, said he couldn’t track the number of re-tweets because his phone locked up when he tried to access his Twitter account.

I definitely didn’t think it would go as viral as it did, the 25-year-old said. I definitely didn’t think the Cleveland fan base would go this crazy about it. Obviously, it was a joke, but just to know how passionate this fan base is, I mean, it’s just really encouraging.

Randall wouldn’t say he planned to pay off his promise if the Cavs win.

One coach feared a plausible scenario where some players stay in the locker room during the anthem to avoid the team getting fined, some players protest on the field not caring about the fines and other players do neither. Teams could have three different groups of players doing three different things.

What’s clear is the NFL created myriad problems with something that was supposed to be a resolution.

If a player has, say, a $20 million offer from the Titans and a $15 million one from the Giants, the difference is so significant that the player likely is going to Tennessee.

What happens, though, if the offer is close, as former NFL player Geoff Schwartz asked on Twitter?

So with individual teams making their own anthem policies and I’ll assume fine schedule, w/some being the Jets (kneel away) and some being the Cowboys (don’t kneel ever)… if in the long run this will effect free agency decisions by top players.
