Why the NFL plans to suspend Jameis Winston for 3 games

The Uber driver retained attorney John Clune, who represented the woman who claimed Winston sexually assaulted her while he was a student-athlete at Florida State University.

However, the NFL concluded that Darby was not in the car for the entire ride:

What happens now? Winston and the NFLPA will surely appeal the suspension to the NFL once it becomes official. Roger Goodell will have the choice of either hearing the appeal himself or passing it off to an arbitrator. If this discipline is upheld, Winston could either choose to serve the suspension or pursue a different outcome by filing a lawsuit against the NFL.

Tom Murphy (R), 4 percent, Colorado Rockies vs. Miami Marlins (LHP Wei-Yin Chen): The underperforming Rockies offense took advantage of some lesser Mets starters, and now they get the chance to continue the momentum against a suspect Marlins staff. Murphy has been sharing the at-bats against a lefty with Chris Iannetta. Using either is fine Iannetta played versus a lefty on Thursday, so it’s probably Murphy’s turn on Friday.

Justin Bour (L), 41 percent, Miami Marlins at Colorado Rockies (RHP Jon Gray): Bour has been a frequent visitor to this space, so we’ll try to keep his mentions to the most apropos scenarios. Having the chance to unleash his power in Coors is such an occasion, despite facing Gray. To that end, after handling his home starts well the past couple of seasons, Gray checks in with a 6.45 ERA and 1.59 WHIP at home.

As former Cardinals coach Bruce Arians has pointed out, however, that approach has its limits.

Weighted on-base average (wOBA) is the primary statistic used in the calculation. Ratings range from 1 to 10, with 10 representing the best possible matchup, statistically speaking, and 1 representing the worst. For example, a 10 is a must-start rating, while a 1 should be avoided (if possible); a 1-2 is poor, 3-4 is fair, 5-6 is average, 7-8 is very good and 9-10 is excellent.

If/when the suspension comes to pass and Winston is unable to win an appeal (or chooses not to appeal) reducing the suspension to one or zero games, the Buccaneers will be without their quarterback when the defending Super Bowl champions come to town.

According to a report Winston is prepared for the NFL to levy a suspension of some kind and the thought from the Winston camp is that would be a maximum of three games… I’ve been told that would seem to be the maximum number of games that the suspension could be. It’s also likely that it’s less than that and it’s one game.
