Wild Card Round – Carolina Panthers v New Orleans Saints

In this cornerback-centric episode of The MMQB, we talk to three CBs who changed teams in 2018—former Seahawk and current 49er Richard Sherman, former Bronco and current Ram Aqib Talib, and former Patriot and current Titan Malcolm Butler—to get their take on the change in scenery and break down their prospects in new defenses, or rather, old defenses with new faces. Plus I’ll give you my top 16 teams for 2018, and get into an interesting reaction to some bad news out of the NFL last week.

It was great to hear Sherm talk about what he be thinking on those plays, Talib says. Running to that certain angle, and he showed two or three examples of it. That was something I felt I could really work on. He puts a lot of emphasis on it, and it turns into big plays.

With Senegal out of the World Cup—and with it, the only black manager in the competition, Aliou Cisse—it appears there is much more work to be done.

As for racism in soccer, Seedorf wanted to make sure that the term is used properly and carefully because it carries a lot of weight. He said that, with evolving technology, it has become easier to identify fans actually participating in racist actions and to dole out punishment when necessary. But if things are to change, Seedorf thinks fines for clubs and teams is the wrong approach.

I think that, for sure, there needs to be taken action, he said. And not only in terms of fines, because I don’t think the fines would help because the fines have been going on for years and years and still we see this kind of behavior. … So I thought they needed to step up the rules in terms of when these types of things happen, to really try and identify and make that effort that these people are banned from football because they are not fans.

Several NFL players were not pleased with the rule themselves.

What NFL owners did today was thwart the players’ constitutional rights to express themselves and use our platform to draw attention to social injustices like racial inequality in our country, Eagles cornerback Malcolm Jenkins wrote on Twitter. Everyone loses when voices get stifled. While I disagree with this decision, I will not let it silence me or stop me from fighting.

Howard as a receiver, however, went from somewhat passable to a liability with shaky hands and limited burst. That has prompted Nagy to get second-year dynamo Tarik Cohen more snaps and touches. Despite his big-play flair in the open field, Cohen was inexplicably underused for most of the 2017 season, even with Howard struggling in the passing game.

That won’t happen under Nagy. Howard is trending toward two-down status, meaning Cohen will see an expanded version of the Sproles Role to complement the wideouts.

Cordon, McCoy’s ex-girlfriend, was allegedly assaulted in a home invasion early Tuesday which prompted a friend of hers to post a photo of the aftermath on Instagram. Cordon’s attorneys’ statements on the assault, and how McCoy was allegedly involved are incredibly serious.

First, Cordon’s attorneys allege the assailant confronted the woman in her bed and ordered her to give him specific jewelry from the home, via ESPN. The attorneys allege McCoy had asked for that same jewelry back in recent weeks.

McCoy and Cordon have allegedly been quarreling in recent months and the Bills running back has been trying to get his ex-girlfriend out of the Milton, Ga. home where she was staying.

The 29-year-old allegedly had the electricity turned off in the house to try to get the woman to move as well as removed security cameras and changed the home’s alarm system.

In addition, attorneys allege McCoy had family, friends and workers go into the home while Cordon was gone and remove furniture to encourage her to leave.

This year, the club is fine. The Indians are playing at an 86-win pace, which is just good enough to feel safe in one of the worst divisions in recent memory. But it’s nothing like last year’s juggernaut, despite very good starting pitching (second-best ERA in the American League), a very good offense (more runs per game than all but three AL teams) and a very good defense (the AL’s third best by DRS).

Myles Garrett plays for the Cleveland Browns.

This has made him a Cavaliers fan by osmosis, and spent much of the NBA Finals tweeting about the Cavs.

Smash Mouth are established defenders of Bay Area sports. They’ll tweet about the Athletics and Warriors whenever they have the chance. Particularly if games involves all stars, and there’s a game on.

With KD, you just stick him in, and he scores, Garrett said. You already knew what they had. They were 73-9 before, and you put the second-best player in the world on an already all-time great team, and of course you’re going to have success, pretty easy success. Anyone can have an off night and they can still find a way to win.

On Thursday, Pederson said the flea flicker isn’t the reason she got a ring. Ha, no, she is a longtime Eagle, the coach told ESPN. The Eagles also gave former video director Mike Dougherty and former ticket salesman Leo Carlin.

It’s easy to think about a football team as a collection of 53 players and a group of coaches, but there are a lot of other people who work hard to help an organization succeed. Congratulations to Carol Wilson on a deserved Super Bowl ring, and kudos to the Eagles for making sure she wasn’t forgotten.

Though Smash Mouth eventually deleted the tweet.

Three teams shot to the other end of the spectrum. The Steelers, Ravens, and Texans all drafted just one first-round player between 2000 and 2014 who failed to start for at least three seasons as a pro.

That sets a few teams apart from the others.

It wasn’t the smoothest snap from Jake McQuaide, but in his defense he wanted to get out of the way of the incoming chalk cloud as soon as possible. Aside from that, it was well-coached execution from holder Johnny Hekker and kicker Greg Zuerlein.

But the real MVP of the video is linebacker Cory Littleton who runs into frame and dives to the ground after the kick.

Was he excited about the moment? Was he disappointed with the result? I’m really not sure, but he brought energy.

Bradford goes down with a torn ACL in a win at Buffalo.

They manage to finish the season with a 10-6 record, and thanks to splitting their series with the 49ers and the Seahawks, they edge Minnesota for the final wild card berth in the NFC.

Weeden does not prove to be the backup they thought. A four-interception performance in a humiliating Wild Card Round loss to the Packers leaves the Kromer and GM Les Snead wondering if they need to be aggressive looking for a veteran quarterback on the free agent market that spring.

Ask them who the Eagles’ quarterback was at Super Bowl 52. Carson Wentz is incorrect. Nick Foles, while being technically correct, is incorrect. The answer you’re looking for is Big Dick Nick, barked out in an accent that somehow sounds like Bud Light Lime smells.

Sing the opening to Meek Mill’s Dreams and Nightmares, then ask them whether or not it’s time marry the game. The response you want here is Yeah, I do.

Hand out D cell batteries to each Eagles fan in attendance. If the first five minutes of the event go by without a Secret Service agent taking one to the back of the head, you’ve orchestrated an event without any Philadelphia fans.

St. Louis isn’t the only surprise team with a shot at the playoffs. The Cleveland Browns look unstoppable with RG3 cruising. Through the first nine weeks of the season, they’ve got a 6-3 record. Three of those wins came against AFC North opponents, a sweep of the Bengals and a split with the Ravens, the only team in the division that looks capable of competing with Pat Shurmur’s squad.

In the luxury suites, the team’s new owner Jimmy Haslam is seen smiling and high-fiving his front office minions. The league’s chattering classes whispered he’d never be able to bring stability to the Browns, much less build a winner, but the standings offer the perfect retort.

You have to look hard to find many smiles in Miami. But at 4-4, Fisher feels good about where his team is at. He reassures fans and the media that they could easily by sitting at 6-2 right now, if not for a handful of flags referees failed throw and the learning curve faced by his young team.

And for me, I feel like this is the time to do that. And so, that message can’t continue to be ignored. And that’s what I think has been happening up until this point. So we just have to continue to stay on topic and continue to push the issues — and not this narrative of who’s right and who’s wrong, but what are the reasons why players are even so passionate about this.

As with Lou Williams last February, the Clippers can take a proactive approach with forward Tobias Harris.

Even if the Clippers treat 2018-19 as a bridge season before chasing multiple max players next summer, extending Harris to a first-year salary of $16.8 million would accomplish two things: lock up a talented 25-year-old in the prime of his career at a team-friendly number and still leave the Clippers with close to $45 million in room.

Harris could be extended for up to four years, $75 million, and his first-year salary would rank 10th among power forwards.

If the offer is not on the table and the Spurs elect to hold on to the forward during the season, Leonard will have to earn All-NBA, MVP or DPOY honors in 2018-19 to be eligible again when he is a free agent next summer.

Keep in mind that Leonard is not super max eligible if he is traded, and teams acquiring him can only extend his contract six months after a deal at a starting salary of $24.1 million, a projected $8 million below where his max salary as a free agent would start. Losing that DPVE option would cost Leonard up to $30 million on his next deal if he’s traded to a new team and re-signs in free agency (for five years) or $70 million guaranteed if he signs with a new team in free agency in 2019 (for up to four years).

Brian Windhorst discusses LeBron James’ commitment to the Lakers with a four-year contract and how it compares to his contracts with the Cavs. (2:10)

This column has been updated with the news that LeBron James is joining the Los Angeles Lakers.

Maybe it was inevitable the moment Dan Gilbert wrote his rage-infused, burn book excerpt in 2010 — poisoning whatever relationship he had with LeBron James, and perhaps pushing James to maximize his leverage with a series of one- and two-year deals upon his return to Cleveland.

Presti was responding to speculation that George was gone, after the Thunder’s disappointing first-round playoff exit, a prevailing assumption that persists.

Throughout the season, George made a number of comments resetting the idea that it was a foregone conclusion that the Los Angeles Lakers were his ultimate destination — at least to those paying attention.

Reds pitcher Michael Lorenzen pinch hits and blows the game wide open with a grand slam, his third home run of the week.

Reliever Michael Lorenzen hit the second grand slam by a Reds pitcher in a week — and his third homer in his past three at-bats — as Cincinnati pulled away to a 12-3 victory Saturday, ending a seven-game losing streak against the Milwaukee Brewers.

Luke Weaver (4-7) went 4 2/3 innings, giving up 10 runs on eight hits, walking two and striking out five. He gave up homers to Markakis in his final inning and a two-run shot to Ronald Acuna Jr. in the second.

At the end of the day, I was just done on a couple big swings, Weaver said. I thought I threw some pitches in good spots, but it’s got to be executed a little bit better and you’ve just got to flush these types of days.

The Braves sent 11 players to the plate in the six-run fifth. After Ozzie Albies doubled in Fried, the Cardinals intentionally walked Freddie Freeman to face Markakis. The right fielder hit his ninth homer of the season and fourth career grand slam off a 3-2 pitch.

Braves: RHP Arodys Vizcaino (shoulder inflammation) is expected to come off the 10-day DL on Monday. The Braves closer threw a side session Saturday and is on target for his return to the team. … C Tyler Flowers, who left Friday’s game with a right hamstring cramp after flying out to end the sixth inning, didn’t start Saturday. The Braves said it was part of the regular rotation between Flowers and C Kurt Suzuki. The two have alternated starts for the past 16 games.

Cardinals: RHP Luke Gregerson (right shoulder impingement) is scheduled to begin a rehab stint at Triple A Memphis on Sunday. He has yet to appear with the minor league club since going on the 10-day DL on May 16.

Braves: RHP Mike Foltynewicz (5-4, 2.14) goes for his first win in a month. After tossing a 4-0 shutout against the Washington Nationals on June 1, he went 0-1 in his final three starts of the month. He failed to get past the fifth in any his final three June outings.

League says Winston risks a potential ban from the NFL with a future violation

The NFL’s public statement on Jameis Winston’s three-game suspension suggested that Winston could be one violation of the personal-conduct policy away from a lifetime ban.

In addition, a future violation of the Personal Conduct Policy will result in more substantial discipline, including a potential ban from the NFL, the league’s statement said.

Of course, the NFL also said after the Ray Rice fiasco that a six-game suspension would be the baseline for domestic violence or sexual assault, and yet Winston got only three games even though the NFL’s own findings concluded that Winston touched an Uber driver in an inappropriate and sexual manner without her consent. So the NFL doesn’t always follow through on warnings about the severity of its suspensions. And the league has used that language in other letters to players suspended under the personal conduct policy, including Ezekiel Elliott last year.

Look for more deals like this to be considered in the future, given that the court of public opinion now has far more power over a celebrity’s career than Roger Goodell ever will enjoy.

According to Jordan Raanan of ESPN.com, Barkley said he plans to invest his football-related revenue and use his endorsement money as his functional financial support.

That’s the goal, Barkley said. Not to touch it.

Barkley already has the best-selling jersey in the NFL and has endorsement deals already set up with Nike, Pepsi and Panini America. He’s managed to buy a house for his parents despite still waiting on the signing bonus from his rookie contract.

Barkley plans to follow the script of Oakland Raiders running back Marshawn Lynch, who has reportedly been similarly frugal with his money earned during his career.
