Chargers tight end Hunter Henry expected to miss season with torn ACL

Chargers tight end Hunter Henry is expected to miss the 2018 season with a torn ACL, the team announced Tuesday.

The 23-year-old has been a dangerous red-zone target for the Charges throughout his two-year career. He hauled in eight touchdown passes and registered 478 receiving yards as a rookie in 2016. Henry was originally selected by the Chargers in the second round of the draft that season.

The NHL’s statement noted that the ruling “does not directly impact the League or any of our Clubs in the short term.”

In a statement, the NCAA said it is still reviewing the decision “to understand the overall implications to college sports (and) we will adjust sports wagering and championship policies to align with the direction from the court.”

The NFL still has to walk the tightrope of protecting all those interests, navigating differing state decisions about sports betting, and its principles (“long-standing and unwavering commitment to protecting the integrity of our game”) re-stated in its response to the Supreme Court ruling.

The idea that they will, in their words, “call on Congress again, this time to enact a core regulatory framework” for sports betting builds intrigue for yet another league appearanceby commissioner Roger Goodell or another high-ranking officialbefore lawmakers who know how often the NFL has been exposed in similar situations previously. Everything the league has said to Congress about concussions, for example.

So, expecting Congress to take the NFL’s side on reinforcing their contradictory views on betting, in the face of a Supreme Court ruling, might not yield much. It will only lengthen the league’s journey to accepting and capitalizing on America’s love of its sport and of betting. It was already part of the way there, but the entire trip will take a while.
